Hi,

I am aware that cleaning or twisting bass strings can restore their timbre. However I am curious as to why they develop the 'tubbyness' that I have heard in several of my friends piano and my church's 1968 piano.
If the string is at the correct tension what is causing the 'tubbyness'? Does the inharmonicity change with string age, e.g. is the older string thinner because of metal creep? If this is the case then why "tubby"?
Do the coils of wound strings vibrate against each other when they are new, but not when old or caked in crud?

Please help.

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
